The Crisis and Challenges in Arabic Language Education

For a language whose number of speakers worldwide is approaching 500 million, many of those interested in the Arabic language and its education know that this language is going through a crisis. Arabic is spoken by the majority of the population in 22 countries, mainly in the Middle East and North Africa.

It is also taught for cultural and religious reasons in many societies outside these 22 countries. Despite the above-mentioned facts, Arabic is struggling to be an attractive topic for its native speakers. Many in the growing generations find it easier to learn English and other languages than to learn Arabic, pursue studying Arabic, find creativity or innovation in learning or teaching Arabic, or advertise its education to other nations.

Perhaps one might even suggest that Arabic is in a crisis, evidently because this article is written in English and suggests a solution for the Arabic language crisis. However, I find no shame in writing this article in English, because it pioneers a solution for the crisis that might revolutionize the Arabic language to a global extent.

Technological Integration in Arabic Language Education

The solution emanates from an innate characteristic of Arabic that is unfortunately not taken into consideration in the currently used curricula for Arabic language education at its various levels. The evidence for the suggested solution here is both historical—it has always been there throughout the ages of the Arabic language—and applicable in a way that fits our technology-oriented modern life all over the world.

The idea of this solution is based on scientific facts about the Arabic language that make it more relevant to technological implementation. Arabic, in its very nature, has always had connections and relevance to the essences of coding and computing that have unfortunately not been adapted to learning and teaching Arabic in the last few centuries. This article will only deliver the broad headings of the bases of the suggested solution, because it gives a glimpse of a project that needs to be adopted on a wide range of educational platforms.

One of the biggest problems with Arabic language education is that it is based on memorization and boring repetition of textual resources that are immensely great but fit into the nature of their era many centuries ago. Trials to modernize Arabic language education worked to an extent with the school and university curricula during the last century—or I may just see this because it worked for me and my generation.

The Evolution And Structure of Arabic Poetry

Arabic was spoken innately and spontaneously by Arabic tribes in the Arabian Peninsula and a little beyond. The spread of Islam into the rest of the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia made learning Arabic an essential skill that prompted generation after generation to be more than keen to learn. Studying Arabic by scholars in an endeavor to make it teachable to the many nations with different language backgrounds led to the discovery of some features of the language that were not thought of by native speakers. One of these features is the system of constructing Arabic poetry.

In the 8th century, the Iraqi scholar Al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad al-Farāhīdī developed a meter system based on his study of the musical meters that governed all the then-available Arabic poetry. Studying much of the available poetry that spanned many centuries before him and that was orally narrated, al-Farāhīdī discovered that all the poetry followed just 15 rhythmic patterns for syllable length. Al-Farāhīdī's fifteen rhythmic patterns (buḥūr (plural; singular: baḥr, literally “sea” in Arabic)) in the Arabic classical poetry meter stood the test of time, for all the scholars who came after him succeeded in discovering but one additional baḥr to make the total number of buḥūr 16, and this number has stayed the same over the last 13 centuries.

The basic metric components of Arabic vocabulary, whether it is used in poetry or prose, are the letters that come from the consonantal root (usually three letters, rarely more than that) and the vowel signs (usually termed “diacritics”). The vowel sounds that vocalize the consonantal root consist of ḥaraka, which means vowel movements, and the sukūn, which equals stillness or silence. In the Arabic poetry prosody system, which was named ʿIlm al-ʿArūḍ by al-Farāhīdī, these diacritics are given a binary system. The ʿIlm al-ʿArūḍ binary system consists of ḥarakas (vowel movements, shown as a vertical line ‘|’) and sukūns (stillness, depicted as a circle ‘ ○ ’). The ʿIlm al-ʿArūḍ binary system is exactly akin to the binary coding system, where ḥarakas (vowel movements ‘|’) are equal to the ones ‘ 1 ’ or the on-state of the bit, which represents the high voltage of the transistor, while the sukūns (stillness ‘ ○ ’) are equal to the zeros ‘ 0 ’ or the off-state of the bit, which represents the low voltage of the transistor.

Binary Coding and Arabic Grammer

In binary coding computing systems, the simple on-off signals ( 1 for on-state, 0 for off-state) were represented in early computers by physical switches or vacuum tubes. They later developed into transistors, enabling compact, reliable circuits that form bits—fundamental units combining into bytes, words, and complex data structures. Modern systems leverage billions of transistors in microprocessors, supporting intricate algorithms, AI, and quantum computing, where qubits extend binary with superposition for enhanced processing. This progression from basic states to sophisticated applications drives technologies like neural networks and blockchain.

In the field of Arabic grammar, to understand the position of a word in a sentence—whether it is a noun, a verb, an adjective, or anything else—the ending of the word should take a grammatical case. The grammatical cases in Arabic are determined by the same concept of ḥarakat (“vowel movements”) and sukūn (“stillness”). The concept of grammatical cases that change words based on their grammatical position in a sentence is not unique to the Arabic language; it is an essential part of Russian and German, among other languages.

What is unique to the Arabic language is the relevance of these grammatical diacritics to the concept of coding. Diacritics (collectively ḥarakat and sukūn) can be amenable to coding in computer programs. So, any ḥaraka ‘|’ and sukūn ‘ ○ ’ can be coded into the bits of the binary system ( 1 for on-state, 0 for off-state). Arabic syntax, traditionally named ʿIlm al-Naḥu, can benefit from this coding amenability to provide tech-savvy generations with attractive solutions like gamification or mobile apps to make them understand Arabic grammar or syntax (ʿIlm al-Naḥu). While some language education apps, for example Duolingo, include Arabic among their list of taught languages, they do not provide sufficient grammar or syntax knowledge or skills for the users. The coding feature of Arabic diacritics is a promising solution for modernizing Arabic grammar education and making it attractive for technology-native young people.

Modernization Arabic Word Formation and Coding

In the other field of Arabic word morphology, ʿIlm al-Ṣarf is the knowledge and practice of word formation. This practice of word formation used to be spontaneously done by native Arabic speakers in Arabia for millennia, and it is still practiced in all Arabic dialects in any majority Arabic-speaking country.

In its original classical Arabic form, this Ṣarf is applied to the letters of consonantal roots of any word by adding different numbers and sequences of ḥaraka and sukūn to them (the consonantal root letters) to form any Arabic word. This same Ṣarf can also be applied to non-Arabic words to provide plural or singular forms of them, to derive a verb or a noun from them, or to make them useful either in day-to-day use in Arabic dialects or even in formal writing systems that use modern Arabic.

Again, the system of ḥaraka ‘|’ and sukūn ‘ ○ ’ can be coded into the bits of the binary system ( 1 for on-state, 0 for off-state). Coding Ṣarf can help in practicing word formation for Arabic language learners. Available solutions, for example the Memrise app, use rote vocab, which depends on the least effective and least dynamic way of repetition and memorization to learn Arabic vocabulary.

The coding solution can even be gamified into a mobile app using touch-drag, virtual reality, or graphic design principles. Artificial intelligence can also have a role in designing Arabic Ṣarf education, not on the widely used Natural Language Processing (NLP) or pattern detection in Arabic text big data resources but based on the principles of coding and Arabic binary diacritics.

Going back to ʿIlm al-ʿArūḍ, another feature of the Arabic language lies in the meters used in Arabic poetry. Arabic and a few other languages use the syllable length meter as opposed to the stress iambic meter in English poetry. The syllable length meter uses what is called tafʿīla (literally "patterned unit"). This makes it an objective quantitative system, which gives it an advantage over the subjective qualitative stress-based iambic English poetry meter.

The binary system of ḥaraka ‘|’ and sukūn ‘ ○ ’ in tafʿīlāt makes it codable by the bits of the binary coding system ( 1 s and 0 s). Arabic poetry is the least endangered aspect of the Arabic language because of its deeply rooted, soul-stirring cultural and musical features that are widely cherished by Arabic speakers. Nevertheless, it has many educational and research opportunities to serve a larger purpose in historical, political, and even scientific studies.

Arabic poetry once was a widely used educational tool that helped learners not just in studying language, but also in studying mathematics, physics, medicine, and astronomy, among many scientific fields. These educational poems are still available in many manuscripts that are valued not just for their cultural and historical value, but also for their scholarly significance. Coding Arabic poetry tafʿīlāt using the computer binary system ( 1 s and 0 s) can make it easier for future technology-native generations of researchers to explore these manuscripts of educational poetry, regardless of what language they speak natively.

It might be out of the scope of this article to discuss how many other historical applications of coding systems in various civilizations were used in different fields of trade, architecture, and mathematics that can support the idea of using a coding system to study the Arabic language, considering how it is ideally suited for computational coding based on the above. Gamification, music, and many exponential technologies are also future directions for coding the Arabic language that will not only impact the Arabic-speaking world but can also globally revolutionize the field of education.

For instance, when an AI attempts to console someone in sorrow, its words might come across as robotic, reminiscent of a standard service reply along the lines of "Your emotional response is noted, we appreciate your interaction with our service."

Moral judgment

Ethical decisions rely on culturally and personally varied values, too intricate for algorithmic coding. While AI aids in decision-making, it fails to fully grasp ethics or resolve conflicts, such as suggesting universal headphone use to address noise issues, including impractical settings like bathrooms.

Intuition

Humans often rely on intuition and common sense to make quick decisions without having to analyze accurate data. This innate ability, which develops through life experiences, is difficult for AI to fully imitate. For example, AI might try to guess the taste of food based on a recipe, but guessing it would be like mixing sugar with salt because it "looks the same."

Dealing with uncertainties and contradictions

Artificial intelligence needs clear and specific data to work efficiently. Ambiguous or contradictory situations that require sensitivity and deep understanding of the human context remain a challenge for it. Humans are able to adapt to unclear situations thanks to their ability to use context and personal experience. For example, AI might try to solve a puzzle, but it would say, "If answer A and B are correct, let's choose C.

Creativity in problem solving

While AI can find solutions based on past patterns and data, thinking outside the box and finding innovative and unexpected solutions is an area where humans still excel. Innovation requires imagination and the ability to see things from new angles, skills that are difficult to code. For example, artificial intelligence may try to fix a broken computer by restarting it a thousand times, while humans may discover that the problem with the cable is not connected to power.

Learning from personal experiences

AI learns from available data but cannot experience life like humans or learn personal lessons from everyday experiences. Personal experiences provide humans with deep understanding and applied knowledge that AI is difficult to acquire. For example, AI may learn that a fire burns after reading thousands of books, while a child learns this from a single experience with a candle.

Tasks that require a complex physical interaction

Businesses that require navigating unregulated environments or handling sensitive and delicate objects in a human

way can be difficult for robots and AI. Humans have the flexibility and ability to adapt to rapid environmental changes

and subtle interactions. For example, AI may try to cook a meal, but end up putting ketchup in coffee and salt in dessert.

However, this also raises concerns about the potential displacement of workers and the need for reskilling and upskilling. According to Ethan Mollick , a professor at the Wharton School, the key is to focus on tasks that only humans can do or should remain in the loop for. He suggests categorizing tasks into "Just Me" tasks, delegated tasks, and automated tasks.

For example, writing letters of recommendation or grading assignments may still be considered "Just Me" tasks, where the human touch and personal investment are valued. On the other hand, tasks like research, writing, and data analysis can be delegated or automated with the help of generative AI.

These are tasks that only a human should do, either because the human wants to personally perform the task or because human involvement is necessary and cannot be fully automated. Mollick provides some examples:

Writing letters of recommendation: As a professor, Mollick says he still writes letters of recommendation by hand because it's a signal that he cares about the student and is purposefully investing time into the task. An AI could likely write a better letter, but the human effort is part of the meaning.

Grading student assignments: Similarly, Mollick still grades assignments manually, even though an AI could potentially do it more accurately. He feels there is an obligation as a professor to personally evaluate students' work.

Reviewing academic papers: When reviewing papers for academic journals, Mollick writes the reviews himself but then has an AI review them as well to compare their assessments.

The key idea is that for certain tasks, the human touch, personal investment, or human judgment is intrinsically valuable and should not be fully automated, even if an AI could technically perform the task better. These are moral or principled lines that may shift over time as AI capabilities advance. Mollick notes there is an open question about whether to use AI for tasks like letters of recommendation, where the AI output may be superior but the human effort has signaling value. Organizations will need to evaluate which tasks truly require that human element versus which can be automated or augmented by AI. So in essence, Just Me tasks are those where human involvement is seen as essential, either for the human investment itself or because human judgment and oversight is required and cannot be fully replaced by AI systems, at least not yet. The boundaries of what constitutes a Just Me task will likely evolve as AI capabilities grow.

Embracing Change

As with any disruptive technology, the adoption of generative AI will require organizations and individuals to embrace change. Leaders must develop a vision for how to build better organizations in this new era, fostering a culture of innovation and experimentation.

Ethan Mollick advises managers to start using generative AI publicly, modelling curiosity and sharing their successes and failures. This approach can help demystify the technology and encourage others to explore its potential.

For senior leadership, the challenge is to recognize the significance of this technological shift and treat it as an organizational priority. Investing in understanding and leveraging generative AI can be the key to building the next great enterprise and becoming a visionary leader of the 21st century.

Exploring the Ethical Implications and Future Challenges of Advanced AI in Healthcare

Introduction

It became an everyday reality that we just receive news about new advances in AI, including medical AI. From a bioethical point of view, this can both be good and bad news. While it is good to hope for increased accessibility and equity in healthcare delivery attained by the advances in AI, there is always an increase in our ethical concerns of biases and privacy breaches. These pros and cons of AI are just in the first page of any AI bioethics text. Today, however, I would like to touch on a commonly discussed concept in AI, which is the concept of AI Singularity.

The Concept of AI Singularity

AI “Harbingers” say: When AI reaches its “awareness”, another “Big Bang” will happen, and the World as we know it will end to give a space for another world. AI Singularity will be reached when intelligent machines become more intelligent than humans. Techno-pessimists project all the drawbacks of AI Singularity to happen at that point of AI awareness or “hyper maturity”. Instead of us “humans” being in control of AI, the latter would become our controller.

Ethical Concerns at AI Singularity

Should we then still expect that at the time of the imagined AI Singularity, that we will have the same current bioethical issues of breaches in our medical data privacy and security and the biases. Or, we should seek to imagine other concerns in the form of AI control over humanity. Will the intelligent machines that we race to create and improve, will they dominate us and start to mess up with our genes to enslave us. If these machines are that intelligent by then, shall we be of any use for them?!

Moral Standards for Intelligent Machines

Since we still have some time to think about our future with AI, let us use this time while we can. We should not wait until it’s out of our hands as the advocates of AI doomsday try to warn us. Instead of all the above crazy imagination of our future with AI from bioethical perspective, should not we think of alternative scenarios?!

One scenario will be based on the moral standard for our intelligent creatures. The beings that we continue to create and that we expect them to be the inhabitants of the planet after us. What moral standards will they have? Will they agree on some moral standards to be the bases for their relationships? How moral will they be toward us among other cohabitant creatures on the Earth? The only valid answer to all of the above-mentioned questions is that whatever moral standard we are feeding into AI will be reflected in the behaviour of AI. Since we have not yet agreed on any bioethical standards to be the ones that we benchmark our decisions towards them, then we should not expect AI to have any standardized moral norms. One can even argue that taking the word in one of its superficial meanings to say that if we can not agree on a single set of standards for AI bioethics, we should not fear singularity. It looks only logical that without “singulating” AI bioethical standards, AI is not expected to reach its “Singularity”.

Human Intelligence and AI

Another bioethical stance towards the subject is that with the expanding intelligence of the intelligent machines, there is ever expansion of the human intelligence behind their creation. “Human intelligence is not solely based on logical operations and computation, but also includes characteristics such as curiosity, imagination, intuition, emotions, passion, desires, pleasure, aesthetics, joy, purpose, objectives, goals, telos, values, morality, experience, wisdom, judgment, and humour.” Intelligent machines are still far from fulfilling even one aspect of these. The role of the human body as a super tool to implement human intelligence is also a factor that is lacking in the intelligent machines. Many exponential technologies beside AI are developing for our benefit. Genetics and prosthetics are just two examples of technological fields that can support human intelligence rather than compete with it. Exponential technologies can be used for the interest of all of the mentioned aspects of human intelligence to enhance it to the maximum extent possible.

Philosophical Debate on AI Singularity

AI Singularity or “Technology Singularity”, also presents itself as a philosophical debate. Going down this road can only be of benefit to a limited sector of the society. Rather than focusing on the philosophical debate, we need to focus on the applied bioethical aspect of the subject. Philosophy could go deep in discussing aspects of AI singularity that could impact our dignity, our identity or even our survival.

Focus on Applied Bioethics

Our attention should be focused on Applied Bioethics. Applied bioethics of AI takes into consideration the impact of AI Singularity on issues like jobs, social inequality, health and longevity, environmental impact, and security and privacy concerns. and how can the society deal with these growing concerns. We can only put to stop the negative trajectories of AI Singularity, if we can develop AI bioethics to a level that is parallel to the fast development of AI. Our fears of the horrible consequences of AI Singularity can only be exaggerated or at least justified if artificial intelligence keeps exponentially developing while our bioethical thinking is lagging for centuries.

The Broad Impact of AI

According to the studies, artificial intelligence can have various impacts on our psychological state. AI can identify, imitate, induce, and heal our psychological state, regardless of the quality of that evidence.

In the fields of psychology and psychiatry, professionals are trying to develop diagnostic techniques for many psychological disorders using AI. They are also no exception from other medical fields trying to use AI to treat these disorders. In the field of medicine and also outside of it, AI is introduced sometimes as a substitute for the human intellectual capacities or as a representative of them.

AI and Understanding Emotions

Terms like “artificial affection” or “artificial emotion” are gaining growing attention in many fields of research. Some researchers try to use them to study mental disorders and their consequences, such as the act of attempting suicide. Whether these researchers try to build artificial models of the suicidal states to feed algorithms that are used to predict suicidal motives, or to study huge amounts real-life data from cases of real people who have committed or attempted suicide.

Other uses of artificial intelligence that deal with our cognitive background are in marketing or customer services. Some uses are predictive, i.e. directed at predicting or evaluating customer satisfaction, the other uses are promotive, aiming to enhance customer satisfaction.

AI in Everyday Life

You can use imagination to think of other uses that might be put in the hands of client to gain better product or service, instead of the uses that are in the hands of the vendor. Use your imagination to the utmost limits and don’t be surprised to find that AI is already there before you.

AI's Ethical Challenges

The ethical aspects of this discussion that are more worth exploring about artificial intelligence are the aspects where AI can inflict our psychological status. Social isolation and loneliness can be a byproduct of AI in two opposite directions. It can be the result of overusing it for the young generations or the result of being deprived of it for the older generation.

AI Anxiety and Social Media

"AI anxiety" is a new term for a genuine disorder that affects different groups of people based on age and education levels. The social media platforms are accused of using their algorithms to exploit the tendency of modern society to seek distraction and create dependence on their use. A recent systematic review examined the issue of "digital manipulation", which infringes on many of our basic rights. This is a topic that deserves a thorough discussion beyond this brief introduction.

The Promise of AI-Powered Support

AI is already shaping our mental health, whether we realize it or not. It's time for individuals, healthcare providers, governments, and tech companies to come together. We must establish ethical guidelines for the development and use of AI in mental health to ensure it becomes a force for good, not harm

My conversation with a medical student made me realize how important it is for doctors, and also patients, to understand the ethical side of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. AI-powered tools are already transforming the way we diagnose diseases, develop treatments, and interact with patients. But the rapid pace of this change leaves important questions unanswered.

Here's why doctors need to grasp the big picture when it comes to AI and ethics:

Patient Trust: Patients need to trust that their privacy is protected, that AI won't lead to biased treatment, and that they're able to give informed consent about AI involvement in their care. Doctors play a key role in building that trust.
Avoiding Harm: AI misdiagnosis or malfunction could lead to patient harm. Doctors need to understand these risks to avoid legal trouble and, more importantly, keep their patients safe.
Shaping the Future: Doctors should be a part of developing and improving AI systems for healthcare. It's crucial their voices are heard in ethical discussions that impact their work and their patients' lives.
The Pace of Change: Moore's Law states that the number of transistors on a chip roughly doubles every two years, leading to exponential growth in computing power. This rapid technological progress means AI systems are quickly becoming more sophisticated. Doctors need to keep up with this pace, ensuring they have the knowledge to utilize AI ethically and responsibly.

Medical schools need to provide the education required to meet these challenges. But AI ethics can be complex, and doctors need practical guidance on how to handle situations in the real world.

Key Issues in AI Bioethics

Let's focus on the kinds of questions doctors and patients should be prepared to address:

Data Privacy: Who owns patient data used to train AI systems? How can we make sure sensitive health information is protected?
Bias: Could AI algorithms perpetuate existing biases in healthcare, leading to unfair treatment of certain groups?
Transparency: Should patients always know when AI is involved in their care? Should AI systems be able to 'explain' their decisions?
Legal Liability: Who is legally responsible when AI-assisted decision-making goes wrong? Is it the doctor, the AI developer, or both?

Teaching AI Bioethics: Let's Get Practical

Medical students, and qualified doctors, need AI ethics education that covers:

Real-world examples: Use case studies to illustrate how ethical dilemmas with AI play out in actual medical practice.
Collaboration: Encourage students to interact with programmers, AI ethicists, and even patients to get different perspectives on the issues.
Evolving guidelines: AI regulations are still developing, so education needs to help doctors stay up-to-date and adapt to changes.

The Big Takeaway

Doctors and patients don't need to be AI experts or philosophers. But, they do need to have open conversations about the rights, responsibilities, and risks around AI in healthcare. We need to find a way of teaching AI bioethics that focuses on practical answers for frontline medical staff and understandable information for patients.

Shimizu Corporation is an extensive engineering and construction enterprise headquartered in Japan that executes JICA projects overseas market established in the 1970s and has developed a track record in over 60 countries.

The company has high awareness and standards of health and safety in Japan and wants to replicate those standards in its overseas construction sites. They realize the HSE risks and incidents at their Uganda and Ghana construction sites and highlight the importance of investing in workplace health and safety training.

Hence, Shimizu contracted UniHouse and ICENT, which is a subsidiary of Gakken Holding to design and deliver specific HSE training for a safer site work. The objective of the training is to reduce workplace injury, enhance public reputation, cut costs and improve productivity

The goals of the construction safety training with a focus on scaffolding and lifting work, fall prevention, the prevention of heavy equipment-related accidents, third-party related accidents, road diversions, and electrical accidents include:

1. To provide attendees with an understanding of the different types of scaffolding and their features and uses, including risks associated with wrong procedures and highlight the proper techniques for erecting, dismantling, and using scaffolding.

2. To teach attendees the safe use and inspection of lifting equipment and devices, including cranes, hoists, and slings.

3. To familiarize attendees with the different types of fall protection systems and how to use them correctly, as well as the importance of proper planning and training.

4. To help attendees understand the common hazards associated with heavy equipment operation and the role of traffic control and signalling in preventing accidents involving heavy equipment.

5. To increase attendees' awareness of the hazards associated with third-party activities on the job site and the importance of proper communication and coordination between workers and third parties to prevent accidents.

6. To teach attendees the hazards associated with road diversions and detours on construction sites and the importance of proper planning and communication in the setup and maintenance of road diversions.

7. To provide attendees with an understanding of the hazards associated with electrical work in the construction industry and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety measures to prevent electrical accidents.

By achieving these goals, the training should provide attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to work safely in the construction industry and help prevent accidents and injuries on the job site.

We all make thousands of choices and decisions every day. It’s actually estimated that the average adult makes up to 35,000 decisions each day in the course of their daily life. Many of the decisions we make are almost instinctive. We make them easily without too much thought, anxiety or stress. This is because our life experiences have taught us how we should feel and respond in familiar situations and circumstances.

But when we’re placed in unfamiliar, critical situations where we need to make a quick decision, our physiological responses can kick in. We might freeze or panic – either failing to make a decision in time or making an incorrect decision in haste.

For many of us, we’re lucky enough that these unexpected situations don’t come around too often. But there are certain professions and situations where people need to expect the unexpected. They need to be prepared to make decisions in unfamiliar, high-pressure scenarios.

People that work in policing, healthcare, education, politics or leadership roles can find themselves in these situations frequently. They often find themselves having to weight up the risks and benefits in highly uncertain situations.

Fortunately, recent advances in immersive technology can deliver scenario-based learning experiences that recreate the tension and physiological responses of unfamiliar situations. This can help improve critical decision making in high-intensity environments.

What is immersive learning?

Immersive learning is an exciting and innovative way to deliver scenario-based training. It uses immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and virtual worlds to help create an engaging and immersive experience for learners.

The use of immersive technologies in learning can not only help engagement, but it can also improve the retention of information up to 75% from traditional training based on studies from the National Training Laboratory.

The realistic nature of modern immersive learning applications can also help learners understand and train their physiological responses to real-world scenarios. It’s a great way for people in healthcare, education, policing and politics to safely practice critical scenarios and leadership training in a virtual environment.

Immersive technology is evolving and improving all the time. Technological giants like Apple, Sony, Samsung, HTC, Microsoft and Meta are innovating in the space and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. The global investment in immersive technologies is increasing and reach $12 billion in 2022 .

All of these tech giants have a commercial interest in making the technology affordable, accessible and easy to use for businesses and consumers.

Why is immersive learning better than textbook, classroom or role play based learning?

You can read all the relevant textbooks about how you should respond to certain critical situations in the real world. You might even have the benefit of an experienced tutor that can explain how they felt in certain situations, and how they responded.

But until you’re placed in the real-world situation yourself, you don’t know how you’re going to react. You don’t know what’s going to happen when your physiological responses to threats, danger or unexpected events are triggered.

The best way to help train your physiological responses is with scenario-based training. This might historically have involved ‘role playing’ critical situations with trained professionals and actors. But this can be very costly and isn’t scalable. It’s also not easily repeatable, with learners unable to revisit the training on a regular basis.

Immersive technologies can deliver scenario-based training that is cost effective, repeatable, and scalable. The same scenario-based training can be delivered to learners all over the world, with scenarios revisited any time they want.

With the current rate of technological advances, we anticipate that immersive technologies are going to be increasingly important for the training of critical decision making and leadership training through virtual environments.

Where is immersive technology currently being used to help critical decision making?

One of the best examples of immersive technologies in action for scenario-based training is Trainer.

Trainer is an initiative by Jigsaw (a department within Google) that helps law enforcement officers improve their de-escalation skills.

It uses a combination of VR technology, voice recognition and natural language processing to create a realistic virtual training environment for a number of de-escalation scenarios.

But Trainer isn’t the only scenario-based training solution to use immersive technologies.

AI and Immersive Technology University in Kuwait

UniHouse has been appointed by Kuwait Association for Needy Families (KANF) as the principal consultant to establish an advanced high-technology university of computer science and information technology.

The scope of consultancy includes the development of the methodology, curricula, and necessary tools to equip students with the knowledge and skills essential for them in computer science and computer technology fields. They will be able to design, develop, and innovate software solutions that take advantage of the latest advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, and cybersecurity.

The university will have affiliation with pioneering international universities in the above topics and is meant to be at the forefront of technology, where students, professionals, and practitioners from the Gulf will come to have access to world-standard teaching equipment administered by elite educators.

KANF plans for the university to be fully operational in 2028. Mr. Bader Almubarak, Chairman of KANF, highlights the mission of the university as noble. ‘We are bringing the most innovative global education to Kuwait by investing in future technology and making it available for students from our region and all around the world.’ Says Mr. Almubarak.

‘The university will host more than 30,000 students by 2038.’ He forecasts. ‘And, it is expected to have a capacity of 1,500 students in a building of approximately 21,500 sqm and will be on a land area of around 40,000 sqm.’ Adds Mr. Almubarak. Administered by high-caliber faculty, the campus will be equipped with sophisticated equipment and technological facilities with teaching aids that will give the students an immersive learning journey.

In collaboration with its worldwide network of educational institutes, UniHouse will set the strategy to adopt internationally accredited programmes addressing the increasing market demand for such majors. Mr. Ben Muziek, Director of Learning and Capacity Building at UniHouse, says, ‘We are excited about our contribution to this state-of-the-art university which will place Kuwait at the heart of innovation in the Middle East region.
